How Your Presence Helps Your Baby in the NICU

Every premature baby has a unique story.
One thing stays the same. Your presence is powerful.

This guide speaks to you through your baby’s perspective so you feel confident and connected during the NICU stay.

How I Like to Be Touched

I feel safe when your touch is steady and calm.
Place your hand gently on my head or feet.

Stroking or tickling can overwhelm me because my nervous system is still growing.

Many babies respond well to a “hand hug.”
Keep one hand on my head and one on my feet.
Your still touch feels like the safety of the womb.

Ask my nurse or NICU doula when I am ready for skin to skin care.
This is often called kangaroo care.

Even if I have wires or breathing support, this quiet contact helps regulate my heart rate, breathing, temperature, and stress.

Keep My World Calm and Cozy

My brain grows fast, but it is fragile.
I need calm surroundings.

Speak softly.
Hum a song.
Read a short book.

I recognize your voice because I heard it before I was born.

Help me follow a simple day and night rhythm.
Bright light during the day.
Soft light at night.

This helps me learn the pace of life outside the NICU.

Your Scent Comforts Me

You can leave a small scent cloth in my isolette.
Sleep with it close to your chest first.

Your scent helps me feel grounded and safe.
Even when you cannot hold me, I can still feel connected to you.

Help Me Practice for Feeding

Before I am ready to feed, I need to explore and learn.

You can help me by:

  • Offering oral care with breastmilk or colostrum on a swab
  • Letting me suck on a clean finger or pacifier during tube feeds
  • Bringing me to your breast for gentle nuzzling without pressure to latch

These simple steps support early feeding skills and strengthen our bond.
They also reduce stress and support brain development.

Help Me Feel Safe During Care

Some procedures are uncomfortable.
Small changes can help keep me calm.

My team may use:

  • A few drops of breastmilk or sucrose to reduce pain
  • Containment holds with your steady hands
  • Clustered care so I can rest longer between touch times

Ask my nurse or NICU doula how you can help.
Your calm presence lowers my stress.

Learn From My NICU Therapists

My therapists help me grow stronger every day.
They can teach you skills that support my development.

You can learn:

  • Gentle positioning that protects my head shape and brain growth
  • Ways to support early feeding reflexes
  • Simple stretches and movements that help me explore safely

Your involvement helps me feel secure.
It also prepares you for our care at home.

Take Care of Yourself Too

When you rest, hydrate, and eat nourishing food, you help me heal.

You do not need to be perfect.
You only need to be steady and present.

If you feel overwhelmed, talk to your NICU doula.
You can share your fears, grief, and frustration.

Your feelings are normal.
You do not have to carry them alone.

You are my parent.
You are my home.

Your touch, your scent, and your voice help my body grow and my nervous system stabilize.
I feel you even when you think I do not.

We grow together.
One breath at a time.
