Breastfeeding: Nourishing Your Baby

By Beata Pryszcz | Lactation Consultant & Founder of Sleeping Little Angels LLC

Breastfeeding is hard. Not because you’re doing it wrong, but because it’s a skill both you and your baby are learning for the first time. And while everyone talks about milk supply and latching, there’s something bigger at play here—your milk isn’t just food. It’s a love letter to your baby’s future health, written in a language only their tiny body understands.

The Secret Superpower in Your Milk

You know those late-night feeds where you’re exhausted but in awe of this tiny human? Science just proved you’re not just feeding them—you’re building an entire ecosystem inside their gut.

Here’s the magic: Your breast milk contains special sugars called HMOs (Human Milk Oligosaccharides). Think of them as fertilizer for “good guy” bacteria like Bifidobacteria. These little microbes don’t just help with digestion—they actually train your baby’s body to avoid storing excess fat.

A 2025 study found that babies with thriving gut flora (thanks to breast milk!) have a 26% lower risk of childhood obesity.

But here’s what I want you to remember: You don’t need a PhD to see the impact. One mom I worked with, Sarah, tearfully told me after 3 months of nursing:

“I never thought I’d last this long [breastfeeding], but now I see how her stomach issues faded. It’s like my milk knew what she needed.”

When Science Meets the Messy, Beautiful Reality

Let’s get real. I’ve sat with moms crying over cracked nipples, babies who “forget” how to latch, and the guilt of supplementing with formula. Here’s what I tell them:

1. Your “Failures” Are Data Points—Not Dead Ends

  • That latch that feels wrong? It might be a tongue tie (we can fix that!).
  • Feeling like your supply’s low? Often, it’s a myth—let’s track diapers and weight gain.
  • You’re not failing. You’re learning.

2. Your Body Is a Safe Space—Even When It Doesn’t Feel Like It

  • Oxytocin (the “love hormone”) flows during feeds, even when baby isn’t latched, calming both of you.
  • Struggling? That’s normal. One client told me, “The first 6 weeks felt like boot camp. Now? It’s our cozy time.”

3. Formula Isn’t “Giving Up”—It’s a Tool

  • I’ve helped moms combo-feed while rebuilding supply. Your baby being fed is what ultimately matters.

Tiny Adjustments, Lifelong Impact

Here’s what works, straight from the moms I’ve supported:

  • Football Hold for the Win
Perfect for C-section recovery or if your baby’s fussy. Pillows are your BFF – we love the boppy.
  • Power-Pumping SOS
Did your baby suddenly nap longer? Use that time! 10 minutes on, 10 off for an hour can boost supply.
  • When to Suspect a Tongue Tie
Clicking sounds? Falling asleep mid-feed? Let’s check for ties—gentle CST (craniosacral therapy) can help (PS – I am certified to help with this!)
